Odd Birds at Shanghai Expo

Posted on 11 June 2009 by bolivar

scarletibisSHANGHAI – Following Japan’s announcement that the Red Crested Ibis will be its mascot at the Japan Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo next May, several other countries are looking skyward for inspiration.

Organizers for the U.S., Russia and several other nations are said to be in “friendly competition” to find another bird that surpasses the Ibis in expressing a message of friendship and eco-protection with China.

The Red Crested Ibis has long been revered in traditional Japanese culture, but became extinct in the 1970s. In the 1980s, the Chinese government sent several birds from its Ibis stock in Shaanxi Province to Japan where it has since been re-established.

At the top of Russia’s list is the unusual choice of The Bird Boy, a seven year-old who suffers from Mowgli syndrome, named after the Jungle Book character who is raised by wild animals.

Pravda reports that “His mother had her own domestic birds and fed wild ones. She neither beat him nor left him without food. She just never talked to him. It was all the birds that communicated with the boy and taught him birds’ language.”

The U.S. is said to be considering Big Bird, Tweety Bird, The Road Runner, Heckle or Jeckle, Daffy Duck, Donald Duck, Jose Carioca and Woodstock.

“Humans have had a relationship with birds since the dawn of man,” said Hannah Lister, who brings decades of Expo and theme-park experience to Shanghai Expo 2010, “but Americans have a special relationship with these adorable creatures. Once the decision has been made, and it won’t be easy given the caliber of our shortlist, I’m confident the Chinese will see our mascot in a most favorable light.”

While Russia and the U.S. are likely to present a strong challenge to the Ibis, the race may be claimed by any one of several smaller countries. Mauritius has, like Japan, is putting forth an extinct entry, the dodo, while Great Britain has its hopes pinned on the albatross. France has the Gallic Rooster and Panama, the Happy Eagle.
