Millions Gather In Shanghai To Watch Clouds Block Sun

Posted on 23 July 2009 by bolivar

cloudsSHANGHAI – People from around the world watched in amazement yesterday in Shanghai as clouds darkened the sky and rain fell.

Between 9:36 am and 9:41 am, the city was plunged into total darkness as heavy rain fell, though due to driver precaution, reinforced police patrols and clear thinking by city authorities, Shanghai reported 50 percent less car accidents than usual, none of them major.

Shanghai has long been considered one of the places that offer the best observation points for cloud and rain enthusiasts, especially during June and July.

Airlines reported that passenger traffic from Tokyo to Shanghai had increased by nearly 80 percent in recent days. Flights from Japan to Shanghai from the weekend to today were fully booked, according to one air traffic controller, with many of the passengers making the trip especially to see the downpour.

Among them was the Natsuma family who landed at Hongqiao Airport on the weekend. Mr Natsuma told immigration police he brought his wife and daughter to Shanghai to observe the clouds which he believed would be “a beautiful shared memory for the family.”

At Pudong International Airport, incoming travelers since the weekend soared by 30 percent with the number of tour groups doubled, immigration police said.

“Apart from the usual Japanese and South Korean tour groups, we are also having special groups of meteorologists from France, Germany and Italy as well as elsewhere in Europe. Many of these people had never set foot in China before,” Shu Wanbang, an immigration police officer with the Pudong airport.

Hans Van Gelder, a meteorologists from The Netherlands, said the weather was impressive. “Sure it rains in Holland, but here the drains back up in five minutes. Good thing I brought my rubber boots.”
