HONG KONG – With casino mogul Stanley Ho, the father of Macau’s gambling industry, hospitalized in Hong Kong, some gamblers are betting 7-1in favor his recovery.
Casino Lisboa sports book director Grady Chu compared the numbers. Of the city’s 32 casino facilities, odds makers at 12 are offering 7-1 for recovery, 6 offer 5-1, while the remaining 18 are pessimistic, offering 3-2 in favor of the tycoon’s demise.
The pessimists include The Venetian Macau’s odds director Bill Henniker, who adjusted his spread by nearly 8 points after learning that the 87-year-old billionaire was not, as first reported, being treated for a rectal injury that he suffered two years ago following a procedure to relieve constipation.
Henniker’s betting on another report that said Ho had fallen and hit his head last week at the home of Angela Leong, one of the four women Ho calls his “wives,” and that he required a brain surgery.
Leong and Ho’s spokeswoman did not immediately return calls from The hospital also declined comment.
Meanwhile, bookies report that Ho’s family members, including daughter Pansy and son Lawrence, have laid down heavy bets, as much as 40 million patacas, with oddsmaker Nick “The Numbers” Hong, who visited the hospital Wednesday. Hong is said to have informed Ho’s family that “the old man is in winning condition. At 7-1, this is a sure thing.”
Ho, worth more than USD 9 billion, ran Macau’s casinos for four decades until his monopoly was broken up in 2002.
Since then, he has faced fierce competition from American operators such as The Venetian, Wynn Resorts and Las Vegas Sands Corp., but his company, SJM Holdings, still leads with nearly 30 percent of the local gambling market.
Macau is the only place in China where casinos are legal.
